What difference does it make to be a Christian in the environmental sector? Many Christians are working to address the climate and biodiversity crises, yet Christian environmental professionals often struggle to connect their faith with work. My journey straddling the sacred-secular divide has been two-fold, understanding how faith is compatible with climate action while grappling with what this practically means for my work.

COP28 comes at a crucial moment as scientists say the world must reduce emissions by 42% by 2030 to avoid the most severe impacts of global heating. However, emissions are still going up, with fossil fuel companies planning to increase production. And according to a report out this month from the International Energy Agency, last year fossil fuel companies were responsible for a minuscule 1% of global investment in renewable energy. Operation Noah Trustee Nicky Bull reviews a new book from Revd Sue Parfitt, an Anglican priest who has become well known in recent years for taking non-violent direct action in the face of political and corporate inaction on the climate and nature crises. As a result of her environmental protests, Parfitt has regularly been arrested, and in ‘Bodies on the Line’ (Lab/ora Press) she gives ‘a reasoned and extremely rational defence of these actions’.
Written originally in German, and with many references to Germany, it is nevertheless applicable anywhere that is dominated by a culture of over-consumption, ambition around accumulation of wealth and possessions, and obsession with a growth economy.
An op-ed written by Revd Dr Rachel Mash of Green Anglicans, Dr Cathy Rhodes of the Diocese of Sheffield and Revd Fletcher Harper of GreenFaith has made the case for Church divestment and a fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty in the wake of the G7 meeting in Hiroshima, Japan – a meeting in which leaders failed to commit to a phase out of fossil fuels.
